"At 1:45 p.m. on the Sunday Christopher Coverdale, a self-employed contractor from Rochdale, drove past the scene.  As he approached the lay-by he saw a man and a little girl on the embankment above the lay-by.  His attention was on these people, so that he had not noticed any car, he thought it foolhardy to be on the moor in poor weather conditions, especially with a child. He recalled the child was wearing a blue, hip-length gabardine coat with the hood up. He believed the child to be a girl, because he could see uncovered legs. The man was facing towards the road, reaching down the embankment and pulling the child up by the hand.  Coverdale described the man as being a 30 to 35 year-old white male, with light-brown or fair hair cut short and giving the appearance of being receding. He was five feet six to five feet eight, plump and dressed in a mid-brown jacket with a check pattern, matching trousers and a beige or mustard-yellow cardigan.


This was the first description obtained of a man and a child.  Dibb was anxious to act, and he personally took Coverdale to the lay-by.  It was not the cold which caused Jack Dibb to shiver when, asked to show the place where the man and child were standing, Coverdale pointed out a spot within yards of the place where Lesley had been found."

Upon the exposure of this miscarriage of justice (conviction in July 1976/life sentence) and Kiszko's release from prison in 1992, a new investigation began and the original police files were reviewed.  Following up on certain leads had abruptly stopped after Kiszko's conviction. The following describes how and why Raymond Hewlett became the Number One suspect in the Molseed case.

In 1975 eleven-year-old Lesley Molseed was abducted and stabbed to death on a Pennine moor, her killer having ejaculated over her body. Stefan Kiszko confessed to her murder and spent 16 years in jail. At the time no positive forensic evidence was offered. He was released in 1991 when the Law Lords declared he could not have been the killer.

Convicted paedophile Raymond Hewlett who has been linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will not be charged in connection with a sex attack in Britain 30 years ago. West Yorkshire cops flew to Germany to question Hewlett, 64, over the assault on an eight-year-old girl and took a DNA sample. He is unlikely to face any charges because he is dying of cancer. McCann detectives have not named him as a suspect, But they want him to account for his movements at the time the youngster vanished. He has not provided an alibi and has refused to speak to private detectives.

Raymond Hewlett, who is originally from Todmorden, was jailed for a number of sex attacks on children in the 1970s in Yorkshire and Wales. He has recently been named in connection with the Madeleine case, and was interviewed earlier this month by the head of West Yorkshire's CID in connection with another unsolved abduction and assault in 1975.
